His Merits, My Merits

HisMerits

Our modern push to bolster self-esteem reminds us to celebrate God’s image in each person!

But as an unexpected by-product, it has removed our awareness of sin and likewise our acknowledgment of our need for a Savior.

Susanna’s startling use of the word condescension is said as a true friend grasping my shoulders. She reminds me, “You did not deserve God’s history-altering visit to your planet to save your life!” We are unholy, stained with the ink of sin from conception, completely incapable of approaching this God of such beauty and such goodness on our own.

It’s easy to forget that terror, even death, awaited those who came near the holiness of God in the Old Testament. And that is what could still await us today were it not for Jesus. Thankfully, grace stepped in and beckons us to rely on His merits, as Susanna states it.

May this reminder of our individual deficiency cause our hearts to respond with gratitude and worship today.
